Iqraa Trust Donates R 160,000 - Its Lights On At Last For Saphumula Senior Secondary School

project dutSince its establishment, Saphumula Senior Secondary School in rural Kwa Zulu Natal has not had any electricity. On Thursday, 4th September 2014 learners and teachers joined by the entire community celebrated with song and dance at a function which took place to handover a system that will now provide electricity to the School.

For many years, the 800 learners and teachers have had to struggle without any power. Now the pioneering project which uses solar and wind power to generate electricity has changed all this. The System provides power to light up all the classrooms and other equipment that the educators need to use to support them while teaching. The System was designed and implemented by the Technology Innovation Agency and KZN Industrial Energy Efficient Training and Resource Centre which are based at the Durban University of Technology “DUT” and was funded jointly by Iqraa Trust and the Muslim Charitable Trust with a total donation of R320,000.

A festive atmosphere prevailed at the handover as Professor Ahmed Bawa, Vice Chancellor of DUT and Mr Mahmoud Youssef Baker, Chairman of Iqraa Trust and director of Albaraka Bank highlighted the benefits that the new system will bring to the School.project dut2

He emphasised the importance of education and urged the students to study hard.
